Indigo: The Filling Station
Richmond, Texas
Summary
Located in the heart of Indigo Commons, The Filling Station stands as a striking centerpiece and cultural anchor. Inspired by the iconic Art Deco gas stations that once lined Texas highways, this modern reinterpretation blends nostalgic charm with contemporary design sensibilities. Its home at the intersection of Mercantile Street and City Heart Avenue ensures high visibility and easy access for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. More than just an eye-catching architectural landmark, The Filling Station is envisioned as a welcoming hub of daily life. It will house a locally owned café-restaurant with the potential to incorporate a curated selection of dry goods and provisions. Whether you're a resident grabbing a quick bite, a visitor exploring the neighborhood, or a neighbor meeting friends, The Filling Station is designed to be a dynamic, multifunctional space that brings people together and celebrates the unique character of Indigo Commons.

Indigo's Third Place
Designed as a community “third place” - a welcoming environment beyond home and work where people can gather, connect, and build relationships - The Filling Station serves as a social anchor for Indigo Commons. Its three thoughtfully oriented patios extend the energy of the café-restaurant into the surrounding public realm, activating adjacent streetscapes and plazas throughout the day. These outdoor spaces are intentionally scaled and furnished to support a range of interactions, from casual one-on-one conversations to spontaneous meetups and larger, programmed community events such as farmers markets, live music, or neighborhood celebrations.

The surrounding landscape further enhances this sense of place, featuring a carefully selected palette of native and drought-tolerant plantings that not only reduce water consumption but also provide seasonal interest and ecological value. This resilient, low-maintenance approach underscores CultivateLAND’s dedication to sustainability and regional authenticity, offering a living, breathing reflection of the Texas prairie environment.
Together, the architecture and landscape design converge to create a timeless, immersive experience that resonates with both nostalgia and forward-thinking community values. The Filling Station becomes more than a building, it’s a place where stories are shared, relationships are formed, and a shared identity for Richmond’s Indigo community is both honored and continually reimagined.
