Indigo: Lake

Richmond, Texas

Summary

The Lake at Indigo stands as the vibrant, untamed heart of the community, a 22-acre natural park that seamlessly intertwines recreation, habitat restoration, and scenic beauty. Acting as Indigo’s wild edge, it provides a meaningful contrast to the neighborhood’s built environment while reinforcing the community’s core values. Just a short stroll or bike ride from residents’ front doors and The Commons, the lake offers a refreshing shift in pace and perspective, drawing people into an immersive landscape where nature and daily life meet.

The lake serves not only as a destination but as a living expression of Indigo’s commitment to people-first planning and long-term ecological stewardship.

"How can a manmade lake become more than a visual amenity, restoring habitat, cleansing water, and deepening our relationship with the land?"

Ecology & Habitat

At the foundation of the lake’s design is a strong ecological ethos. In collaboration with the environmental design firm Biohabitats, the team approached the lake as a restoration project as much as a recreational one. Native wetland plants were reintroduced to stabilize shorelines and enhance natural filtration, while expansive pollinator meadows attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects vital to a healthy ecosystem.

Structural habitats, such as standing dead trees (snags), submerged root balls, and artfully placed downed logs, mimic nature’s own strategies for shelter and nutrient cycling. These features enrich biodiversity, improve water quality, and create essential sanctuaries for a wide range of species, including turtles, fish, migratory birds, and aquatic invertebrates. Above and below the surface, the lake is a thriving web of life, designed to regenerate and flourish over time.

Places for People

While deeply ecological, the lake is equally a place for people, crafted to support movement, connection, and everyday joy. A gently curving concrete trail traces more than a mile of shoreline, inviting walkers, runners, cyclists, and strollers to experience the landscape in motion. Along the route, curated pauses include kayak and paddleboard launches that invite adventure on the water, a dedicated fishing pier for leisure and bonding, and shaded lawns perfect for picnics, quiet reflection, or community events.

Thoughtfully designed for all ages and levels of mobility, the park is accessible, inclusive, and ever-evolving. Future features like lakeside “Indigolf” holes, miniature golf installations inspired by the landscape, add an element of play and interactivity. Whether one seeks solitude, exercise, or family fun, The Lake at Indigo is a living, breathing amenity where nature and community grow together.
