Summary:
Last weekend we volunteered with Trees for Houston at Willow Water Hole, joining 30 others to plant nearly 100 native trees. The organization recently celebrated its millionth tree, an incredible reminder of what sustained community effort can accomplish.
Large parks and detention landscapes like this are more resilient and valuable when rooted in diverse native plantings and when supported by people who care enough to show up.
notes:
Volunteer events provide the opportunity to connect and learn with the community.
Event began with short demonstration that outlined best practices when planting trees.
Keep root flare 1-2” above surrounding grade.
Amend soil with mycorrhizae.
Avoid over compacting soil.
Mulch tree and provide tree trunk guard.
New trees will shade multiuse trails, screen concrete detention facilities and provide habitat for several native species.
