Summary:

A potato tower is a vertical gardening method designed to grow a high yield of potatoes in a small footprint. It’s a favorite for urban gardeners or anyone looking to save back-straining labor during harvest.

Instead of planting potatoes deep in a traditional trench, you plant them at the base of a vertical structure. As the potato plants grow upward, you periodically add more soil, straw, or mulch to cover the stems.

Because potatoes grow from “stolons” that sprout above the seed potato, the vertical space allows the plant to produce multiple layers of tubers throughout the column.

notes:

  • Efficiency of Space = Higher Yield. 10-20 pounds of potatos can be grown in just 2 or 3 square feet.

  • Elevating the crop can reduce soil-bourne pests and make it difficult for critters to find your potatoes.

  • Vertical structures naturally drain better than your typical in-ground planting reducing the probability of root rot or other soil bourne diseases.

  • Once it is time to harvest, simply tip over the potato tower or unteather the wire mesh structure and let the soil and crops spill out of the sides.
